3M is sharing a video that shows how its 3M™ Dyneon™ Fluoroelastomers resist chemical absorption and swelling when immersed in methanol.

The time-lapse video shows the results of methanol immersion testing over a 24-hour period and demonstrates why peroxide cured 3M™ Dyneon™ Fluoroelastomers are used in automotive applications that need to resist chemical swell, a condition that can cause a loss of sealing performance.

To withstand specific automotive fluids such as methanol, 3M™ Dyneon™ Fluoroelastomers can be formulated with different amounts of fluorine. As the video shows, there is a significant difference in the swell of low, medium, and high fluorine materials at the end of the test. Although the low fluorine material had a swell percentage of 89%, the high fluorine material (FPO 3820) swelled only 0.3%, demonstrating its ability to support many challenging automotive sealing applications.
